How to turn
So I am 23 years old and I basically make my living as an artist. Trust me it wasn’t overnight it took me about 6 years a name change and lots of research sweat and tears to even get a inch. But the thing is if you are passionate about something its nothing you can’t do to achieve your goal. I have deals on the table and everything BUT its certain goals i want to accomplish first before I even sign with a major.
So to the point at hand! I bet you’re wondering How can you make money in the music business when they keep saying that the music business is dead. Well let me tell you this they are WRONG!!! the music business is not dying it is actually expanding and more lucrative than ever especially if you are an unsigned artist. Now what might be really dying is the RECORD business. Which is a BIG difference from the Music Business. But i personally disagree with that also because if you look at the facts Physical sales still account for about 75-80 percent of the market place. Though it is declining it still is VERY relevant.
Artist nowadays have to think of new ways to bring in income. You have to research know how to market and brand yourself correctly and just research the business of what you are trying to get into. But first thing is first practice your craft. The Reason i say this is you must perfect what you do best in order to compete. The Game is now more open than ever with all the different outlets used to display someones art. So in order to beat people to the punch you have to stand out. When i say stand out i dont mean try to be different cause honestly right now being DOPE is actually different.
One you figure out the music you want to do your image and how you want to market yourself now its time to record your music and find out how to get it out there Social media and blogs are cool to start building up a base BUT thats now where it ends. There is a BIG Misconception that being on blogs and sites will get you your deal. In all honesty and trust i appreciate every blog that has posted me and participated in my music BUT being realistic if you took all the site visitors of some of the biggest music blogs and they ALL bought a cd they wouldnt even get you past the 50,000 mark lol! and if you’re on a major thats considered a fail. And if you’re indie that would be good but most people just download so long story short you aren’t really making sales unless you ask the blogger to put an itunes link of the project or single
Blogs are used to create awareness about your music and brand. So if someone clicks on a song from you but you have nothing about you anywhere else (website facebook etc..) you just potentially lost a fan which could have been a sale.
So now lets say you’re starting to build a base now you’re wondering how do i get these people to buy something from me. And that my friend is where your CREATIVE juices start coming in. In this day and age the label or just business people in general (managers agents etc) want you to dothis yourself and once they see you doing it they want to hop in! Which ithink is RETARDED! because if you figured out how to do it yourself Why would you need them??? BUT thats another article for another day!
Now a GREAT way to make sales and this is a way i do it is Music Licensing! Getting my songs placed in tv film and video games. now this is great because its WAY more exposure than JUST being on the internet. BUt it has to work together with the internet. You use the placements to generate interest so people can find and communicate with you and where would they find you..THATS RIGHT..YOU GUESS it……….THE INTERNET!! also its alot of lucrative money in the music licensing business. It is a 4 billion dollar industry and its OPEN! Now wouldn’t you want a piece of the pie??
Also with Music Licensing if you’re licensing songs from a project you can aalways try to negotiate that they could help promote your project which thus leaves to more awareness if people love your song thats in the tv show or film. and you potentially just gained another fan! So hopefully this helps you out a bit!! and remember in order for all of this stuff to work
CREATE ART THAT REACTS!!!
